BEVERLY, Mass. -- Host Endicott used an eight-goal scoring run that bridged the second and third quarters Saturday to build an insurmountable advantage and the Gulls went on to take a 13-7 men's lacrosse victory over Nazareth in the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Endicott, members of the Commonwealth Coast Conference, improved to 1-1 overall after getting three goals from Sam Abate and two apiece from Ben Clark, Jack Sutherland and Mike Sudora. Nazareth got two goals and one assist from
Drew McNerney and one goal and one assist from
Colin McElligott, but dropped to 1-2 following the disappointing defeat.
Nazareth had advantages in ground balls (33-28) and face-offs (15-8), but Endicott was able to take advantage of 22 Nazareth turnovers to claim the win. The Gulls led 2-1 after one quarter and then rattled off five straight goals in the second quarter and three more early in the third to take a commanding 10-1 lead. Nazareth responded with four straight goals to move within striking distance at 10-5, but Endicott maintained its resilience to erase any comeback hopes.
After Endicott scored the game's first two goals, McNerney scored late in the opening period off a pass from
Jon Roth to make the score 2-1. Abate scored two of Endicott's five goals in the second quarter as the Gulls sruged to a 7-1 lead at the break.
The Gulls scored three more times early in the third quarter, including an extra-man goal by Sudora to make the score 10-1. McNerney's second goal with 5:17 left in the third ended a scoring drought that lasted nearly 26 minutes.
Griffin Avery scored off an assist from Roth before the third period ended and long-stick Trstian Gosselin and McElligott scored early in the fourth to make it 10-5.
Endicott's Neal Parry scored with 6:54 left to end Nazareth's scoring run and extinguish the Golden Flyers' comeback chances.
Kevin Hussey and
Walker Denton each netted their first goals of the season later in the period.
Tim Vinton won 14 of 22 face-offs and had a game-high nine ground balls for the Golden Flyers and
Eric Almquist played all 60 minutes in goal and made 13 saves.
The Golden Flyers are back in action Tuesday for a non-conference game at Brockport at 4 p.m.
