WASHINGTON, Pa.-- Host Washington & Jefferson built a two-goal advantage and held off the Golden Flyers in the fourth quarter Sunday to take a 2-1 Empire 8 Conference field hockey victory.
The Presidents, defending E8 champions, won for the first time in conference action to improve to 1-1 in the E8 and 4-4 overall. Nazareth slipped to 4-5 overall and 1-1 in the E8.
W&J scored in the final minute of the first quarter and then early in the fourth quarter to take a 2-0 advantage. Lindsey Diggan and Rachel Fromm had the W&J goals.
Nazareth tried to rally and generated an opportunity with a penalty corner in the 49th minute. A shot by
Jennifer Hilts was saved by W&J goalie Rena Israel. A violation, however, resulted in a penalty stroke and freshman
Bailey Selman converted for her sixth goal of the season.
That was the best chance that the Golden Flyers would get as they were unable to muster any more shots on goal.
The Presidents had a 14-6 overall advantage in shots and a 5-4 edge in penalty corners. Sophomore
Amanda Chuttey had 10 saves in goal for Nazareth. W&J has now won the last nine meetings with the Golden Flyers in field hockey and are 12-4 against Nazareth overall.
Nazareth plays three more times this week, starting with a non-conference road game at William Smith Wednesday at 5 p.m. The Golden Flyers are home Saturday for an Empire 8 Conference game against Houghton and then play at Skidmore Sunday.
