GENEVA, N.Y. -- Host William Smith scored the go-ahead goal just 24 seconds into the fourth quarter Wednesday and the Herons went on to take a 3-1 field hockey victory over Nazareth in non-conference action at McCooey Field.
The Golden Flyers' third straight defeat dropped their overall record to 4-6, while William Smith improved to 3-6. The Golden Flyers play two more games this weekend -- at home Saturday against Houghton in an Empire 8 Conference match at 1 p.m. and at Skidmore Sunday in a non-conference match at 1 p.m.
William Smith led 1-0 at halftime on the strength of an early goal by Emma Schafer, who scored off a pass from Sophie Craig.
Nazareth tied the score by converting on its only shot of the third quarter. The play originated off a penalty corner off the stick of
Natalie L'Hommedieu. Sophomore
Mikaylee Whalen gained credit for the goal after her blast deflected off the stick of a Herons' defender and into the goal.
The score remained tied until early in the fourth quarter when Schafer delivered her second goal of the game as she lifted a shot past Nazareth goalie
Amanda Chuttey, who finished with 14 saves.
William Smith added a third goal about 10 minutes later as Mackenzie Wodka closed out the scoring.
William had a 29-8 edge in shots and a 5-4 advantage on penalty corners. In addition to Whalen,
Bailey Selman,
Jennifer Hilts and
Caroline Desautels each generated shots on goal.
