ROCHESTER, NY – Three different players scored goals and two others added assists to lead the Nazareth College field hockey team to a key Empire 8 victory as the Golden Flyers posted a 3-1 win Saturday over Houghton.
Houghton (4-8 overall, 1-2 E8) opened the scoring midway through the first quarter but Nazareth (5-6, 2-1 E8) freshman Caroline Desautels scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season with just 15 seconds left in the opening quarter with an assist from senior Alexandra Livesey to knot the score at 1-1 after 15 minutes of action.
In the second quarter, junior Natalie L'Hommedieu put the Golden Flyers up 2-1 with less than a minute to play in the first half. The unassisted goal was her second of the season.
Nazareth had a chance to extend the lead midway through the period as L'Hommedieu was awarded a penalty stroke but lifted the ball off the crossbar and out of the net and the score remained 2-1.
Late in the third period, freshman Bailey Selman notched her seventh goal of the season as junior Lydia Dewart sent a ball across the mouth of the goal and Selman redirected it into the goal for the 3-1 Nazareth lead.
The Golden Flyers defense prevented Houghton from a single shot in the final quarter and Nazareth posted the victory. Nazareth held a 24-7 edge in shots and a 12-2 advantage in penalty corners.
Sophomore Amanda Chuttey made four saves and freshman Jessica Holtz played the final quarter and did not need to make a save.
Nazareth hits the road for its next two games at Skidmore Sunday and at Utica for an Empire 8 game next Saturday.
