SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Host Skidmore built a three-goal first-half lead and then held off the Golden Flyers in the second half to take a 3-1 non-conference field hockey win over Nazareth.
The defeat gives Nazareth a weekend split of games and moves the Golden Flyers' overall record to 5-7. Nazareth defeated Houghton, 3-1, at home Saturday. Skidmore improved to 6-5 overall.
Skidmore scored late in the first quarter and then twice more in the second to build a commanding 3-0 advantage before halftime. Nazareth was able to generate scoring chances in the second quarter with seven shots and six penalty corners, but the Golden Flyers were held in check.
They finally broke into the scoring column early in the third quarter following a penalty corner off the stick of
Natalie L'Hommedieu. Senior
Jennifer Hilts took the initial shot, then scored off her own rebound for her seventh goal of the season and 30th of her career, tying her for fourth place on the Golden Flyers' all-time goal scoring list.
Nazareth managed just one shot in the fourth quarter as Skidmore finished with a 24-13 advantage overall. The Thoroughbreds also had a 15-9 edge in penalty corners.
Amanda Chuttey played the first half in goal for Nazareth and had seven saves. Freshman
Jessica Holtz played the second half and had six saves without allowing a goal.
The Golden Flyers are off until Saturday when they travel to Utica to resume their Empire 8 Conference schedule against the Pioneers at 4:30 p.m.
