Field Hockey Suffers Overtime Road Loss to Utica

UTICA, NY – Senior Jennifer Hilts scored twice and gave the Nazareth College field hockey team a 2-1 lead early in the fourth quarter but Utica College battled back for a late goal to tie the score and added the game-winner in overtime to record a 3-2 Empire 8 victory Saturday afternoon.

Hilts opened the scoring for Nazareth (5-8 overall, 2-2 E8) 4:21 into the contest with a breakaway down the right side of the defense and into the arc for her eighth goal of the season.

Utica (5-7, 3-1 E8) scored its first goal late in the third quarter to knot the score at 1-1 as the teams headed to the final 15-minute period.

Hilts gave the Golden Flyers a 2-1 lead five minutes into the period for her team-leading ninth goal of the season. Junior Abby Szumloz was credited with the assist.

With less than two minutes remaining in regulation play, the Pioneers scored to tie the score and force the overtime period.

With 4:21 elapsed in the extra session, Utica netted the game-winning goal.

The Pioneers held a 26-4 edge in shots as Nazareth scored on half of its shots in the game. Utica also held a 12-1 edge in penalty corners and Nazareth sophomore Amanda Chuttey made 14 saves on the day with sophomore Mya Maloof and Szumloz each making a defensive saves for the Golden Flyers.

Nazareth will play a non-conference game vs. Oswego Tuesday and celebrate Senior Day Saturday against Hartwick in an Empire 8 game in Rochester.
