ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore Amanda Chuttey made 11 saves, including nine in the second half, as the Nazareth College field hockey team dropped a tight 1-0 decision to Ohio Wesleyan Saturday afternoon on the Artificial Turf Field.
The Nazareth (1-1) defense was strong in the first several minutes but a third penalty corner in the first quarter resulted in a goal by Ohio Wesleyan (2-0) on a rebound as the only goal of the game.
The offense controlled more play in the second quarter but were limited to only two official shots on goal in the first half.
In the second quarter, sophomore Mikaylee Whalen had a good scoring chance as she collected a rebound near the left side of the cage and send the ball back across the crease that was tipped wide by the Bishops goalie.
In the second half, Ohio Wesleyan applied more offensive pressure with a 13-2 shots advantage but the defense and Chuttey kept the game close with several key saves.
Late in the fourth quarter, senior Jennifer Hilts had a good scoring chance as she broke free from 20 yards out and raced in on the left side of the goal but lost control of the ball that went over the end line wide of the goal.
Chuttey kept the game at a one-goal deficit with a pair of diving saves in the final minute of play and also stopped a penalty stroke that was awarded as time expired.
The Golden Flyers return to action at 12 pm next Saturday with another non-conference game at Keuka.
