ELMIRA, NY – Freshman Jake Costa rebounded to shoot a 1-over par 39 on the back nine Tuesday and finished at +12 in a tie for 19th place overall as he led the Nazareth College men's golf team to a 10th place team finish at the Elmira College Spring Invitational at the Elmira Country Club.
Oswego was declared the team champion after finishing in a tie with the SUNY Delhi B team since the Delhi squad would not figure in the final team standings. Each team shot +33 on the 6,687 yard par 72 course. Penn College was one stroke back at +34 and the SUNY Delhi A team was third at +45.
SUNY Cobleskill (+50) was fifth followed by Penn State Altoona (+54), Keuka College (+57), Medaille College (+58), Hobart College (+59) and Nazareth at +72 in 10th place. The Golden Flyers finished ahead of Elmira (+140) and Morrisville (+142).
Costa struggled on the front nine with seven bogies and a double bogey. The freshman scored a par on the third hole for his +10 score after nine holes.
On the back nine, Costa rebounded to par every hole except for a double bogey on 13 as he carded a 39 on the back half of the course for his final+12, 84 score.
Jeff Gurbacki was the next lowest Nazareth score with a +19, sophomore Jake Adams was one stroke back at +20 and freshman Bryce Dorough rounded out the Nazareth score with a +21.
The Golden Flyers will finish the season over the weekend at the Oswego Invitational Saturday and Sunday.
