ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Host Nazareth scored the first 20 goals of the game Saturday as the Golden Flyers cruised a 22-2 men's lacrosse victory over Sage in Empire 8 Conference action.
The second straight win for the Golden Flyers improved their record to 6-10 overall and 4-3 in conference play. The Gators, in their first season of intercollegiate play, dropped to 8-8 overall and 2-4 in the E8.
Prior to the game, Nazareth paid tribute to its five seniors who were competing at home for the final time --
Anthony Basile,
Jack Crowley,
Jordan Goldbourn,
Cory Mason and
Mike Riis. All five were prominent in Saturday's outcome. Riis had a career-best four goals to go with one assist. Basile added three goals and three assists and Crowley scored twice and had four assists.
Thirteen different players scored goals for the Golden Flyers, including long-sticks
Evan Isenberg and
Matthew Townsend, who picked up their first career tallies.
Nazareth did most of the offensive damage in the first quarter in building a 13-0 lead. Basile and Crowley each had all six of their points and Riis added four of his five points.
Nazareth scored five more times in the second quarter to extend the lead to 18-0 before halftime. Isenberg and
Joe O'Hare each scored to open the third quarter before Sage finally got on the board on an unassisted goal by Shea Obado.
Drew McNerney and Riis also scored in the third quarter for Nazareth.
Jon Parrinello also finished with three goals for Nazareth.
Tristan Gosselin scored twice.
Jeremy Jacob,
Walker Denton,
Jon Roth and
Keaton Doon also had goals.
At 4-3 in conference play, Nazareth trails Alfred (4-2) for the fourth and final E8 playoff spot. The Saxons play at St. John Fisher Wednesday and then host the Golden Flyers Saturday in the final regular-season game. Alfred lost to Hartwick, 12-4, Saturday, while Fisher dropped an 11-9 decision to Stevens in a battle for first place.
