ONEONTA, NY – Freshman Jadyn Abrams scored 15 points and junior Rachel Benedict added 13 points and six rebounds for the Nazareth College women's basketball team but it was not enough as the Golden Flyers dropped a 71-55 decision to St. John Fisher in the semifinal round of the Empire 8 Tournament Friday night at Hartwick College.
Nazareth (18-8) fell behind early 21-10 after the first quarter but battled back in the second period with a 17-10 advantage but still trailed 31-27 at the break.
St. John Fisher (19-7) added a bit to its lead with a 15-14 advantage in the third quarter but put the game away in the final period with another 25-point quarter while limiting Nazareth to 14 points down the stretch.
Benedict scored nine of her 13 points in the second half but Nazareth struggled from the field hitting just 32 percent from the floor and connecting on just 6-of-19 from 3-point range. The Golden Flyers made 11-of-14 free throws while St. John Fisher made 16-of-24.
Isabell Gjonaj, Miyah Sizer, Caley Cornwell and Demetria Woodard scored six points each and Sizer added a team-leading three assists.
St. John Fisher advances to play Hartwick College in the Empire 8 Championship game Saturday. Hartwick defeated Stevens 72-52 in the other semifinal game.
