Nazareth outscores Alfred in regular-season finale, 64-40

Golden Flyers (18-7 overall) finish second, play in E8 Tournament at Hartwick

ALFRED, N.Y. -- Thirteen different players reached the scoring column on the stat sheet Tuesday as visiting Nazareth closed out its regular-season women's basketball schedule with a one-sided 64-40 victory over Alfred.

Nazareth completed the regular season with an 18-7 overall record and a 13-3 mark in the Empire 8 Conference, good for second place. Alfred finished its season at 8-17 overall and 4-12 in the E8.

The Golden Flyers will head to post-season play this weekend at Hartwick. As the second seed, the Golden Flyers will play St. John Fisher in Friday's opening round Friday at 7:30 p.m.. Top-seeded Hartwick will pay fourth-seeded Stevens in he other game at 5:30. The championship game will be played Saturday at 3:30 p.m. with an automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament on the line.

On Tuesday, the Golden Flyers were in control from the outset, leading 21-10 after one quarter, 39-19 at halftime and 52-27 after three quarters.

Rachel Benedict produced her 16th double-double of season as she combined 14 points with 12 rebounds, both game highs. Lizzie Straub and Demetria Woodard each scored eight points.

Benedict and Jadyn Abrams each knocked down three-point shots in the first quarter as Nazareth took the early lead.

Woodard hit two three-pointers in the second quarter as she scored all eight of her points during that 10-minute stretch as the lead grew to a 20-point margin at 39-19.

Benedict opened the third quarter by drilling another three-pointer to quickly erase any Saxon comeback thoughts. She and freshman Sarah Simmons each had five second-half points.

The Golden Flyers were tough defensively in holding Alfred to 21.9% shooting from the field (14-for-64) and just 12.9% (4-for-31) from three-point range.

In finishing second in the regular-season standings the Golden Flyers return to the Empire 8 Tournament after missing out last season. The Golden Flyers won both meetings against Fisher this season.
