ALBANY, N.Y. -- Using a balanced offensive attack Friday, visiting Nazareth was able to grind out a 80-73 men's basketball victory over Sage in Empire 8 Conference action.
Five players reached double figures in points as the Golden Flyers won for the 12th straight time to improve to 16-3 overall and to stay unbeaten in conference play at 10-0.
Tyler Stenglein led the way with 16 points and
Jake Burgio added 11 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Chris Jones and
Brendan Wind also had 11 points each and
Zach Stenglein contributed 10. The victory was Nazareth second of the season over the Gators, who dropped to 9-11 overall and 5-6 in E8 games.
Nazareth trailed early in the game and the score was tied at 30-30 with five minutes left in the first half. Six straight points by Jones -- two baskets and two free throws --Â pushed the Golden Flyers in front for good at 36-30.
Brendan Broderick came off the bench to hit a three-point shot and another basket just prior to halftime to lift the Golden Flyers to a 43-37 lead at the break.
Nazareth's second-half lead reached double digits midway through after
Tyler Stenglein hit a three-pointer and baskets by Jones and
Isaac Nelson followed to extend the lead to 62-48 with 9:53 left.
Nazareth made 30 of 65 shots for the game (46.2%) and went 13-for-19 from the foul line. The Golden Flyers made seven three-pointers, with
Tyler Stenglein,
Zach Stenglein and
Cody Green hitting two each.
Jones' final stat line included nine rebounds and three blocks, while Wind's line featured eight assists and no turnovers. Four Sage players scored in double figures, led by Anthony Mitchell's 18 points.
Nazareth returns to action Saturday for another Empire 8 Conference game at Stevens at 5 p.m.
