Box Score PITTSBURGH., PA – Senior Hannah Miller and the Nazareth College women's soccer defense put together a strong effort but Carnegie Mellon used a quick flick shot on a corner kick midway through the second overtime period to pull out a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon.
The Tartans (10-3-1) scored first with a goal in the ninth minute as a Carnegie Mellon player drifted free in the box and finished a play for the early lead.
The lead only lasted a few minutes as Nazareth (9-4-2) answered six minutes later on a play started by freshman Megan McCraith who sent a long ball back into the box after a failed clearing effort. The ball bounced in front of the Tartan keeper and fellow freshman McKayla Hughes headed the ball into the back of the net to tie the score.
The score remained tied for the rest of the first half and the entire second half despite offensive pressure from Carnegie Mellon.
The Tartans had a great chance to take the lead with 30 minutes left with a shot from point-blank range but it was turned away by Miller who finished with a season-high 14 saves on the day.
In the second overtime period, Carnegie Mellon used intense offensive pressure that resulted in three consecutive corner kicks. The first two were turned back by the Nazareth defense including a leaping save by Miller on the second attempt.
The third corner, with 6:10 remaining, came into the box in front of Miller and Carnegie Mellon's Alex Adams was able to get a foot on the ball and redirect it into the goal just under the cross bar for the winning goal
The Tartans had an advantage in all of the statistical categories with a 23-4 shots edge and a 16-2 shots on goal lead. The Tartans also had a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
The Golden Flyers return home to finish the regular season Saturday against St. John Fisher with a noon Empire 8 contest which will also be senior day for Nazareth.
