ROCHESTER, NY – Senior Danielle Synowski recorded eight kills and fellow senior Delaney Martin added six but it was not enough for the Nazareth College volleyball team as the Golden Flyers dropped a 3-0 decision to St. John Fisher Wednesday night in an Empire 8 contest in Kidera Gymnasium.
St. John Fisher (12-5 overall, 3-0 E8) took an easy 25-11 victory in the opening set with a late run and then needed to come from behind in both the second and third sets for the win. The Cardinals won the second set 25-21 after trailing 18-13 and then posted a 25-22 win in the third set after Nazareth (8-5, 2-1 E8) had established an early 7-3 lead.
Junior Jessica Barry led the Golden Flyers with 15 assists while freshman Kaylee Kelly and sophomore McKenzie Hart combined for 11 digs. Kelly added three aces for Nazareth.
The Cardinals were led by Alea Steigerwald's 15 kills while Lauren Gilbert added 11. Steigerwald added a team-leading 11 digs and Rebecca Hay served four aces.
The Golden Flyers return to action Friday with the start of the Lycoming College Invitational and a match against host Lycoming at 5 pm. Nazareth continues Saturday with matches against Marywood at 10 am and a noon match against RIT in the tournament.
