ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Senior
Brendan Wind scored 19 points and was one of five Nazareth players to score in double figures Friday as the Golden Flyers won for the ninth straight time, 100-84, over Hartwick.
Wind's last basket of the game, in the closing minute, also brought him to 1,000 points for his career, making him the 25th Nazareth player to reach that milestone and the second in as many games.
Jake Burgio scored his 1,000th point in Tuesday's win at St. John Fisher. It also marked the first time this season that the Golden Flyers have reached the century mark in team scoring as they improved to 13-3 overall and a perfect 7-0 in Empire 8 Conference games. It was Nazareth's second win of the season over the Hawks, who dropped to 7-11 overall and 3-6 in the E8.
Freshman
Zach Stenglein played well off the bench for the Golden Flyers as he connected for a career-high 17 points with five three-point baskets. Senior
Tyler Stenglein also scored 17 points, Burgio added 12 and sophomore
Stephen Gabel finished with 11. Senior
Chris Jones had eight points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
The Golden Flyers enjoyed a hot shooting night as they made 33-of-59 shots from the floor (55.9%), including a season-best 13 of 24 (54.2%) from three-point range. They were in control from the outset, scoring the first basket of the game -- by Tyler Stengein -- and never trailing.
Nazareth made nine three-pointers in the first half from seven different players -- both Stengleins, Burgio, Wind, Gabel,
Isaac Nelson and
Daniel Jacob -- to build a commanding 52-36 lead in the first 20 minutes. The Golden Flyers were never seriously challenged in the second half as their lead stayed in double digits, reaching 23 points, 88-65, on a basket by Wind with 7:08 to go.
In scoring his 19 points, Wind shot 6-for-11 from the field and 6-for-7 from the foul line. He also passed for eight assists.
The Golden Flyers are back on he hardwood Saturday as they travel to Utica for a 4 p.m. tip-off. The Pioneers are 4-4 in the league and 10-6 overall after knocking off Stevens Friday.
