Women's volleyball rebounds to down Hartwick in 4

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth rallied from a lackluster opening set Saturday to defeat Hartwick in a four-set women's volleyball match. The Golden Flyers won by scores of 16-25, 25-14, 25-20, 25-9.

Nazareth is 12-3 overall and 3-1 in Empire 8 Conference matches, while Hartwick dropped to 6-9 overall and 1-4 in the E8.

Junior Melissa Newcomb and senior Madison Joseph each had 11 kills for the Golden Flyers and sophomore Jessica Barry combined 22 assists with four service aces and five digs.

Nazareth started slowly as three straight Hartwick aces helped te Hawks jump to a 15-3 lead, from which the Golden Flyers could not recover.

Nazareth's fortunes were reserved thereafter. The Golden Flyers raced to an 8-1 lead to open the second set as Joseph contributed two kills and Kelsey Milligan had a block and a service ace. The lead continued to grow with Newcomb adding three of her kills before the set concluded.

The third set was close early with Nazareth holding a slim 11-10 advantage before using  6-1 scoring run to break things open. Joseph had four more of her kills and Celia Cordero, Danielle Synowski and Barry each had service aces.

Nazareth closed out the Hawks in decisive fashion in the fourth set as Newcomb (4) and Joseph (3) combined for seven more kills.

Nazareth is on the road again Tuesday for a non-conference match at Keuka at 7 p.m.
