Rochester, NY – The Nazareth men's volleyball squad fell to NYU Friday night in a pivotal UVC match 23-25, 25-22, 22-25, 24-26, with freshman
Antonio Sargent carding a career-high 16 kills (.229). He also had five digs in the loss.
Nazareth is now 17-11 overall and 4-4 in UVC play, while the Violets move to 14-7 and 4-4, respectively.
Nazareth closes out the regular season Saturday, hosting Stevens (19-4, 7-1) at 12 p.m. for Senior Day.
Nazareth couldn't overcome the Violets in the opening set as NYU scored three of the final four points to break a tie at 22. Sargent,
Zachary Gillard,
Sam Bittker and
Kane Wittorff each had three kills in the set.
After trailing 8-2 in the second, Nazareth came all the way back to tie the score at 19 apiece following one of Sargent's five kills in the set. Following the score being evened at 20, Nazareth rattled off four straight points, fueled by the serve of
Dan Shorney. He had a service ace to make it 24-20.
Sean Dillon finished off the set for the Golden Flyers.
The reverse happened at the end of the third, as NYU broke open a 20-20 match and notched five of the final seven points.
The Golden Flyers appeared to be on their way to forcing a fifth set, up 24-22, but the Violets evened the score following a kill and a service ace. Following another service ace from Evan Lindley, Nazareth had an attack error to surrender the set to NYU.
Bittker finished with nine kills, while Gillard hammered down eight with six digs. Wittorff notched six kills on a .600 attack percentage.
Jacob Gleason led Nazareth with 11 digs, while
Jake Kemp had 40 assists.
