Stevens outlasts Nazareth in 4 sets

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Third-ranked Stevens outlasted host Nazareth Saturday in an exciting four-set men's volleyball match as the Ducks secured the top seed for next month's United Volleyball Conference Tournament. The Ducks won by scores of 25-20, 31-33, 25-11, 33-31.

Stevens improved to 20-4 overall and 8-1 in UVC matches while Nazareth dropped to 17-12 overall and 4-5 in the conference.

Junior Zachary Gillard had 16 kills for the Golden Flyers and senior setter Jake Kemp amassed 48 assists. Stevens got 16 kills from Dylan DeBoer and 51 assists from Jacob Patterson.

After dropping the first set, Nazareth was able to eke out a second set that was tied 19 times. Nazareth led 24-21 late in the set, before Stevens rallied. Nazareth finally prevailed on a kill by Sam Bittker for point number 31 and a solo block by Gillard, who had six kills in the set.

Stevens came back to take the third set in decisive fashion, then led 20-17 in the fourth set before Nazareth rallied and the lead see-sawed up until the teams were tied at 31-31 following a kill by Gillard. Stevens secured the set and the match on a kill by Ryan Byrne and then a combined block by Byrne and Jonathan Frenzel.

Antonio Sargent added 11 kills for the Golden Flyers and Bittker had nine. Kemp and Jacob Gleason each had eight digs.
