OWINGS MILLS, MD – Stevenson's Mike Davis scored just :29 seconds into overtime to deliver a devastating 3-2 blow to Nazareth Saturday night in UCHC action. Nazareth fought back from two goals down after the first period, with goals in the second and third, before Davis' 11th goal of the season propelled the Mustangs to the win.
Nazareth is on the outside, looking in for its playoff chances, sitting at 9-12-2 overall and 6-7-1 in conference play with two games remaining. In order to have a shot at the six-team tournament, Nazareth most win both its remaining games against Manhattanville and King's next weekend at Bill Gray's Iceplex.
Stevenson had the better of play in the first period, outshooting the Golden Flyers 10-7. Dominic Brenza lit the lamp first on an even strength goal 8:58 into the game.
Seven minutes later, the Mustangs surged ahead, 2-0, on a power play goal from Davis. It was 2-0 after the first period.
The Golden Flyers trimmed the lead to one after the second period, as James McDonald converted on the power play from Austin Romzek and J.R. Wojciechowski.
Nazareth, which outshot the hosts 20-9 in the third period, eventually evened up the score near the midway point on David Powlowski's team-leading ninth goal of the season. The Golden Flyers finished the game 1-for-4 on the power play.
"I'm really proud of our effort from the games this weekend," said head coach George Roll. "We played six periods of good hockey and did everything right except win the games. These last four contests have been our best stretch all year. Our guys never quit and that shows a lot about their character."
A shot off the crossbar with under a minute to play in regulation nearly lifted Stevenson to a regulation victory.
It took Davis little time in the extra period to net his second of the day and lift the Mustangs to a key 3-2 win.
Nazareth finished the game with a 40-34 advantage in shots.
Michael Tilford was 29 save in net for the Golden Flyers.
