Golden Flyers roughed up by Washington & Lee, 94-68

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – A poor shooting display led to the Golden Flyers' undoing Sunday as Nazareth was overwhelmed by Washington & Lee in men's basketball, 94-68.

The game served as the opener of the Mauro Panaggio Invitational at the DME Sports Academy. The Golden Flyers fell to 4-3 overall and will play again Monday in the tournament's consolation game at 12 p.m. against either Brockport of Gallaudet. Washington & Lee improved to 6-3 and will play in the championship game at 2. Cody Green led Nazareth with 13 points. Kevin Underwood and Tyler Stenglein each scored nine.

The Golden Flyers, who have struggled shooting the ball for most of the season, made just 23 of 66 shots (34.8%), including on 5-for-22 (22.7%) from three-point range. They went just 2-for-12 from the field in the opening minutes of the game and fell behind by as many as 15 points in the first half. It was 37-22 with 3:46 left, before the Golden Flyers closed the half with a 9-2 scoring run to slice the lead to 39-31 at the break. Green hit a three-pointer to start the scoring spree and Jake Burgio scored with :48 left to close the half.

The Generals quickly erased any Nazareth comeback hopes with a blazing start to the second half. Roy McMillan (game-high 23 points) buried a pair of three-point baskets on the Generals' first two possessions and the lead returned to double digits. Nazareth, meanwhile, continued to struggle by hitting just one of hits first 12 shots. The Generals made nine of their first 15 shots over the first seven minutes to turn the game into a rout. It was 62-35 when Nazareth called timeout with 12:40 to go.

Nazareth's problems were compounded by a 52-30 disparity in rebounding. Twelve of the Generals' rebounds were gathered at the offensive end. W&L shot 36-for-68 (52.9%) from the field overall and 9-for-20 (45%) from three-point range.

For Nazareth, Green's 13 points included three three-pointers. Chris Jones gathered seven rebounds.
