PINE CITY, N.Y. -- After falling behind 3-0 to #5 Elmira College Saturday afternoon, the Nazareth College women's hockey team rallied for three straight goals, including two by freshman Hailey Redders with the tying goal coming just 12 seconds into the third period but the Soaring Eagles rebounded and scored the final three goals to escape with a 6-3 victory in the United College Hockey Conference (UCHC) game in the Murray Athletic Center.
Elmira (8-2-1 overall, 6-0 UCHC) fired 22 shots in the first period and scored twice in the last 2:11 of the period to take the 2-0 lead at first intermission. The Soaring Eagles added to the lead at the 7:03 mark of the second period to hold a 3-0 edge.
Redders started the Nazareth (10-2-0, 6-2) rally just 39 seconds later as the Golden Flyers scored their first goal of the weekend series.
Less than three minutes later, Emily Kromer scored to trim the lead to 3-2 and the two teams played an exciting but scoreless remainder of the period as Elmira took the slim 3-2 lead into the second intermission.
Nazareth came out flying in the third period and Redders tied the game at 3-3 just 12 seconds into the final stanza. Elmira had not won a game when the Soaring Eagles allowed three goals or more in a game since 2014.
Five minutes later, Elmira took a 4-3 lead and added a power play goal at the 14:36 mark to make it a 5-3 lead. The Soaring Eagles added an empty net goal to cap the scoring in the final minute of play.
Redders finished with two goals and Keeley Rose added two assists for Nazareth. Goalie Adrianna Brehm had her second consecutive career high as she recorded 44 saves.
The Golden Flyers are off for the remainder of the holiday break and will return to action Jan. 8 with a non-conference game against SUNY Oswego in Skaneateles.
