Lizzie Straub Leads Nazareth to Championship Game

SELINSGROVE, PA – Junior Lizzie Straub scored a game-high and career-high 23 points while fellow junior Rachel Benedict added 15 points and 12 rebounds as the Nazareth College women's basketball team scored a 78-54 victory over Westminster College in the opening game of the Susquehanna Trailways Tipoff Tournament Saturday at Susquehanna University. The Golden Flyers will face host Susquehanna in the 3 p.m. title game.

The win for Nazareth (1-0) advances the Golden Flyers to the 3 p.m. championship game of the tournament Sunday.

Straub's previous career-high was 16 points in a freshman year win over Hilbert.

Benedict scored six points and grabbed five rebounds in the opening quarter as the Golden Flyers jumped out to an 18-9 early lead. Straub hit three baskets including the first of her four 3-pointers on the night for a team-best seven points in the second quarter. Nazareth led 44-27 at the break.

In the second half, Straub stayed hot with 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting including a perfect 3-for-3 from 3-point range. The Golden Flyers were an impressive 15-for-24 (62.5%) from the field in the final two quarters to pull away for the win.

Freshman Jadyn Abrams finished with eight points while Isabella Gjonja added five points, seven rebounds and four assists.
