LA VERNE, Calif. -- Nazareth's women's volleyball team flew back to New York late Saturday after dropping their last two matches in at the Leopard Invitational hosted by La Verne and Pomona-Pitzer.
The Golden Flyers will bring a 13-7 overall record into Wednesday's non-conference home match against Oswego after falling to Whittier in four sets by scores of 23-25, 25-20, 25-14, 28-26 and to La Verne in three by scores of 25-14, 25-12, 25-17.
Carmen Sapp had 12 kills in the Whittier match and
Delaney Martin added nine.
Jessica Barry had 36 assists and
McKenzie Hart had 16 digs. Nazareth used a .364 hitting percentage (15-3-33) to take the first set with Sapp,
Madison Joseph and
Kelsey Milligan each accounting for three kills. Nazareth appeared to be in control by racing to a 19-11 lead in the opening set, before Whittier rallied to within 24-23. Joseph, however, secured the final point with a kill.
Whittier dominated sets two and three, then won a close final set in which Nazareth produced 14 more kills. Nazareth led 23-20, but could not hold on as Whittier tied the set at 24-24, 25-25 and 26-26 before taking the final two points.
The La Verne match was more one-sided as the Leopards hit .282 (36-12-85), including .333 and .379 in the first two sets respectively. Sapp posted nine kills and Joseph and Milligan each had four.
