CLAREMONT, Calif. -- Nazareth's volleyball team dropped a pair of west coast non-conference matches Friday with two more scheduled for Saturday. The Golden Flyers lost a four-set match to Redlands by scores of 25-23, 25-17, 19-25, 25-16 and a three-setter to Pomona-Pitzer by scores of 30-28, 25-21, 26-14.
The Golden Flyers bring a 13-5 overall record into Saturday matches against Whittier at 6 p.m. eastern time and against La Verne at 8:30 p.m. eastern time.
Senior
Carmen Sapp had 10 kills and sophomore setter
Jessica Barry had 35 assists against Redlands (8-9 overall). Senior
Madison Joseph added nine kills and 13 digs and freshman libero
McKenzie Hart amassed 17 digs.
The first set proved pivotal as Redlands pulled away from a 14-14 tie to lead 22-18 late in the set. Nazareth closed to within 23-22 and then 24-23 following a kill by Sapp. Redlands' Paige Davidson then secured the set-clinching kill for the two-point win.
Nazareth had a season-high 27 hitting errors, including 14 in the first two sets to help Redlands prevail. Joseph had four of her kills and senior
Kelsey Milligan had three in the third set as the Golden Flyers won that. Nazareth hit just .091 in the fourth set and .118 overall (44-27-144).
In the second match against host Pomona-Pitzer, junior
Delaney Martin had nine kills and Barry had 26 assists and Hart totaled 16 digs.
Nazareth trailed 12-6 early in the first set, before rallying to take leads of 23-22, 24-23, 25-24 and 26-25 late in the set. With the score tied at 28-28, P-P closed out the set on back to back kills by Gaby Harrison.
Nazareth led 15-12 in the second set before the Sagehens rallied. Martin had five of her kills and seven of her 10 digs in the set. Joseph added all six of her kills in the third set, but the Golden Flyers squandered a lead again. They led 17-12 at one point and they were up 22-21 late before losing. Vicky-Marie Addo-Ash had a kill for the 25th point and Britnie Casillas delivered a service ace on match point.
