ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Sophomore Savannah Bothner recorded a season-high 30 digs and senior Carmen Sapp had a team-best eight kills but the Nazareth College volleyball team surrendered a late lead in the fourth set and dropped a 3-1 decision to the University of Rochester Wednesday night in a non-conference game in Rochester.
Rochester (20-9) won the opening set 25-16 but Nazareth (15-10) came back strong and posted a 25-14 win in the second set to even the match. In the third set, Nazareth scored four consecutive points late in the set to close the gap to 21-18 but the Yellowjackets scored four of the final six points to take a 25-20 win and go up 2-1 in the match.
The was back and forth before the Golden Flyers put together a four-point run late to take a 19-15 lead and led 23-20 after a block by senior Kelsey Milligan and junior Melissa Newcomb. Rochester battled back to tie the score at 23-23 and the teams traded points down the stretch until the Yellowjackets finally pulled out the 29-27 win to close out the match.
Bothner's season-high 30 digs pushed her over 900 for her career. Milligan added six kills and four blocks as she surpassed the 200-block assist total for her career.
Sapp had eight kills to lead the offense while junior Delaney Martin added six kills. Sophomore Jessica Barry had 26 assists and senior Celia Cordero served a team-leading three aces.
The Golden Flyers will host Houghton and Sage Saturday in Empire 8 action in Kidera Gymnasium.
