Volleyball Sweeps Past Houghton and Sage

ROCHESTER, NY -- Junior Melissa Newcomb had 18 kills including a team-leading 10 against Houghton as the Nazareth College volleyball team posted a pair of 3-0 victories over Houghton and Sage Saturday in Empire 8 Conference action in Kidera Gymnasium.

The Golden Flyers (17-10 overall, 5-1 E8) beat Houghton (10-16, 4-4) to start the day by scores of 25-14, 25-10 and 25-20 and then closed the afternoon with a dominating 25-7, 25-7, 25-11 win over Sage (5-21, 0-8).

Against Houghton, Nazareth hit for a .319 percentage as a team as Newcomb had 10 kills, senior Carmen Sapp added nine and fellow senior Kelsey Milligan chipped in eight to lead the attack. Sophomore Jessica Barry handed out 36 assists and senior Celia Cordero led the team with three aces and 10 digs.

Against Sage, the Golden Flyers scored early and often as the team recorded a .493 attack percentage as Newcomb and senior Madison Joseph each recorded eight kills in the balanced attack. Freshman McKenzie Hart served four aces and Barry added 27 assists to her total for the day.

Milligan led the team on the day with four blocks as she became just the fifth player in school history to clear the 300-career block milestone and now has 302 career blocks.

The victories clinched a playoff spot for the Golden Flyers. Nazareth will play at Elmira Tuesday and finish Empire 8 regular season play Wednesday at home against Utica for Senior Night.
