ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Senior
Carmen Sapp had a match-high 14 kills and sophomore
Savannah Bothner had 19 digs as host Nazareth defeated Oswego Wednesday in a four-set women's volleyball match at the Kidera Gymnasium. Scores were 25-16, 22-25, 25-19, 25-18.
Nazareth improved to 14-7 overall, while Oswego dropped to 13-9.
Sapp's 14 kills came with five hitting errors on 31 attempts for a .290 hitting percentage. Junior
Delaney Martin added 10 kills and seniors
Kelsey Milligan and
Madison Joseph each had nine kills. Milligan added four blocks as Nazareth limited Oswego to a .092 hitting percentage (39-27-130).
Sophomore
Jessica Barry played the first two sets and had 20 assists, while
Celia Cordero had 20 assists over the final two sets.
Nazareth started strong by scoring the first six points of the opening set and were never seriously challenged, The lead grew to 20-10 as Sapp had four of her kills in the opening set.
Sapp had five more kills in the second set, but Oswego evened the match by breaking away from a 19-19 tie. The Lakers scored four straight points to pull away.
In the third set, Joseph had three kills and Bothner added eight digs. The set was tied at 8-8, before Nazareth pulled away with Cordero scoring the final two points on service aces.
In the fourth set, Nazareth jumped to a 9-3 lead, then Oswego rallied to close the gap to 14-13. Nazareth pulled away, though, as Martin delivered four of her kills and Sapp and Joseph each had three.
Nazareth is back in action this weekend at the RIT Invitational. The Golden Flyers play RIT Friday at 5 p.m., then Brockport and Buffalo State Saturday at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
