ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Sophomore Jessica Barry handed out 34 assists, served four aces and had seven digs for the Nazareth College volleyball team but it was not enough as RIT came from behind to post a 3-2 victory over the Golden Flyers Friday evening on the first day of competition at the RIT Tournament.
Nazareth (14-8) won the first set using a late rally to score a 25-23 win to start the match. RIT (18-2) recovered to take the second set 25-22 before the Golden Flyers regained the lead with a 25-22 win in the third set with another late rally.
The Tigers put together a late burst scoring 10 of 11 points near the end of the set to capture the fourth set to even the score and force the fifth set tie breaker. In the fifth, RIT opened up an early lead and fought off a late Nazareth rally for the 15-10 win.
Nazareth looked to have the first set in hand with a 24-21 lead after a pair of kills by senior Carmen Sapp but a questionable call allowed RIT to narrow the gap before a service error gave Nazareth the 25-23 win.
RIT held an early 12-7 edge in the second set before the Golden Flyers battled back to tie the score at 15-15. RIT scored six of the next nine points to regain control before winning 25-22 to even the match.
The third set was close throughout until Nazareth scored four consecutive points after the score had been tied at 19-19 and held on for the 25-22 win to regain the match lead.
The fourth set was filled with scoring rallies for both sides with Nazareth taking an early 6-3 lead as Barry served five consecutive points. RIT rallied to go ahead 11-9 before Nazareth scored another five straight points.
After an RIT timeout, the Tigers scored 10 of 11 points for a 21-15 edge and coasted to the 25-19 win to force the fifth set.
RIT took the early lead in the final set with an 8-3 edge before Nazareth came back to get as close as 11-10 but RIT scored the final four points for the victory.
Sapp finished with 11 kills while senior Madison Joseph added nine and fellow senior Kelsey Milligan added eight kills and four blocks. Sophomore Savannah Bothner led the defense with 18 digs.
The Golden Flyers return to action Saturday with an 11 am match against Brockport and a 1 pm match against Buffalo State. Both matches are at RIT.
