ROCHESTER, N.Y. --
David Powlowski scored his second goal of the game, a power play tally with :48 left in regulation Tuesday, to lift host Nazareth to a 3-2 men's hockey victory over SUNY Canton at Bill Gray's Regional Iceplex.
The power play goal was Nazareth's first of the game in six chances and enabled the Golden Flyers to extend their unbe3aten streak to seven games (5-0-2) and improve to 8-5-2 overall. SUNY Canton is 3-10-2 overall following the first-ever men's hockey meeting between the two schools.
"It probably wasn't our best game, but we found a way to win it," said Nazareth Coach
George Roll. "They deserve credit for coming in here and battling and making it difficult for us."
Powlowski now has seven goals on the season, including four in his last two games. With the score tied 2-2 late in the third, Nazareth benefited from an interference penalty to Canton's Ben Beasley. Nazareth had some of its best chances of the game and finally cashed in on Powlowski's shot from the slot off assists from
Jacob Paluch and
Matt Manzella.
That gave the Golden Flyers their first lead of the game. SUNY Canton pulled its goalie in favor of an extra skater, but the Kangaroos were unable to generate a shot in the final seconds.
The game was scoreless until late in the second period when Joe Deveny scored his team-leading 11th goal, a power play tally, off assists from Tyler Bullard and Ben Beasley.
The Golden Flyers evened the score early in third period as freshman
Ray Falso banged home a rebound for his sixth goal of the season off assists from
Austin Romzek and
Brian Miller.
Five minutes later, Canton scored again as Dylan Rosen netted his first goal of the season on a low shot from the left point. Beasley and Ryan McIntosh gained assists.
Powlowski's first goal, at 8:19 of the third, evened the score again as he rammed home a centering pass from
Ryan Walter.
Powlowski then cashed in on their third power play chance of the third period to give the Golden Flyers the hard-fought win.
Michael Tilford played all 60 minutes and made 33 saves. Austin Washkurek had 40 saves for SUNY Canton.
Nazareth plays again Saturday on the road against fifth-ranked Oswego at 7 p.m. Nazareth's next home game is Feb. 3 against Lebanon Valley.
