POTSDAM, N.Y. – Freshman goalie Sean Kuhn set the program record for saves (56) in his first-career start, while David Powlowski netted two goals to help Nazareth defeat SUNY Potsdam 5-3 on Saturday.  Additionally, senior Oliver Janzen chipped in two assists, becoming Nazareth's career points leader with 74 on 31 goals and 43 assists.  Janzen surpassed 2017 graduate Dominik Gabaj, who ended his career with 72 points on 34 goals and 38 assists.

Nazareth pushes its unbeaten streak to a school-record six games (4-0-2) with the win, as the Golden Flyers improve to 7-5-2 overall, while Potsdam drops to 7-5-2.

"We were on our heels for a bit in the first period, but we played better after that," said Nazareth Coach George Roll. "They were a pretty physical team, so I'm happy with how we stood up to it. Getting three points up here this weekend is a big deal."

The two-game series with the Bears -- Nazareth and Potsdam played to a 2-2 tie on Friday -- marked a homecoming of sorts for Roll, who was the head coach at nearby Clarkson for eight seasons before starting the Nazareth program in 2012-13.

It was a high flying first period with four goals scored in total, although the Bears held a 20-7 edge in shots.

Potsdam opened the scoring seven minutes in, converting on a 5-on-3 power play.  Nazareth, however, was able to respond 1:40 later on an odd man rush, with Powlowski cashing in his fourth goal of the season from J.R. Wojciechowski and John Power.

Nazareth was able to take a brief lead with four minutes left in the period on the extra man opportunity.  After an initial shot was saved, Matt Manzella was able to deke the goaltender and slot it into the open net.  Zander Pryor and Jacob Paluch picked up assists on the play.

The Bears needed just :10 seconds to notch the equalizer as the score was 2-2 at the first intermission.

In the second period, Powlowski put the Golden Flyers back on top 3:49 in.  Connor Davis and Janzen were credited with the assists.  With that assist, Janzen became the all-time points leader at Nazareth.

After surrendering a 5-on-3 goal in the first period, Nazareth repaid the favor later in the second. Power jammed in a shot on the doorstep at the 6:30 mark from Austin Romzek and Janzen to push the visitors lead to 4-2.  Nazareth finished the game 2-for-5 on the power play, while the Bears were 1-for-8.

Potsdam was able to get a goal back later in the period to trim the margin to 4-3, heading into the final period.

The lone goal of the third period came on a penalty shot from Romzek, who beat the goalie glove side 8:33 for an important insurance goal. (Watch video here).

Kuhn backstopped 56 shots, to earn his first career victory.  Ed Zdolshek 16' held Nazareth's previous single game saves record with 50 against SUNY Geneseo on 10/18/12.

Nazareth returns to the ice on Tuesday, hosting SUNY Canton at 4 p.m. for its lone home game in January.
