FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Hard to believe, but it's been 20 years since Nazareth's men's lacrosse team defeated Washington College to capture its third NCAA Division III title in a six-year span.
That accomplishment was acknowledged Sunday at the Division III championship game at Gillette Stadium, where Salisbury defeated RIT, 15-7 to take the 2017 title.
Back in 1997, Nazareth got an overtime goal from Ryan McDermott to defeat Washington, 15-14, to claim the title at Byrd Stadium in College Park, Md. The Golden Flyers finished 13-3 that year and returned to the championship game in 1998 and again in 2004.
Nazareth made its 22nd NCAA Tournament appearance in 2017 after winning the Empire 8 Conference title for the 10th time. The Golden Flyers finished 11-9 overall after falling to Stevenson in the first round.
