Geneseo, NY – Nazareth fell in a pair of non-conference games on Wednesday at Geneseo, first in extra innings before being blanked in game two. The Golden Flyers rallied to force extra innings in game one before falling 7-6. The Knights took game two, 4-0.
Nazareth drops to 9-7 on the season, while Geneseo improves to 11-3.
Nazareth returns to action on Saturday, when it travels to Ithaca for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
Game 1 – Geneseo 7, Nazareth 6 (8 innings)
Kylie Papagelos hit a walk-off single in the eighth inning to propel the hosts to a game one victory, 7-6.
Nazareth played from behind for most of the game, never leading the tight contest.
Marissa Tortora had a strong outing for the Golden Flyers, going 3-for-5 with three RBI. Her first double of the game scored
Sarah Papponetti to make the score 3-2 in the third. Papponetti had an RBI earlier in the frame.
Trailing 6-3 in the sixth, Nazareth pushed three runs across to knot the game.
Kristen Simmons had an RBI with the bases loaded to pull within 6-4. Later, Tortora smashed her second double of the game to score two and tie the game.
Nazareth left two runners on in the seventh before the Knights were able to capitalize in the extra inning.
Nicole White pitched 7.2 innings, allowing nine hits, while striking out seven.
Meghan Barry was 2-for-4 and Papponetti 2-for-5 in the loss.
Game 2 - Geneseo 4, Nazareth 0
Geneseo scored all four runs it would need in the opening inning on five hits. Nazareth had two errors in the inning as just two of the runs were earned.
The Golden Flyers had six hits in the game, two of which came in the second inning on singles from White and Barry.
White and
Delaney St. George had four of the Golden Flyers hits, both going 2-for-3.
Mertens surrendered just four hits following the five-hit opening inning. She had two strikeouts in the defeat.
