Ithaca Edges Softball Twice

ITHACA, NY – The Nazareth softball team lost a pair of competitive contests Saturday on the road at Ithaca College, falling 5-2 in game one and 2-0 in the second contest.

Nazareth falls to 9-9 overall and 2-4 in Empire 8 play with the losses.  Meanwhile, Ithaca improves to 11-5 overall and 4-0 in conference play.

Nazareth will travel to Utica College on Sunday for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

Game 1 – Ithaca 5, Nazareth 2

Nazareth scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning, both of which were unearned.  Following a Nicole White double, Meghan Barry reached a fielding error that allowed the first run to cross.  Later in the inning, Kristen Simmons notched an RBI-single for the 2-0 advantage.  Nazareth, which had just three hits in the game, registered two of them in the second.

Ithaca got two runs back in the third to even the score at 2-2, including scoring one unearned following a throwing error.

The Bombers eventually notched the go-ahead runs in the fifth.  The first two hitters singled and a fielder's choice  brought home Jesse Fleck.  An RBI double later in the inning made it 4-2.

Ithaca added an insurance run in the sixth for the final scoring of the game.

Nicole White suffered the loss on the mound, allowing four runs on eight hits, while striking out five.

Game 2 – Ithaca 2, Nazareth 0

Ithaca's Emily Holden delivered a two-out RBI double in the second inning which would prove to be the game-winning run. 

The score remained that way until three-straight singles led to another run for the hosts in the fourth.

Rachel Mertens fell to 5-3 on the mound, allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out one.

Stephanie Mongelli was 2-for-3 in the defeat.
