Softball splits pair at Brockport

Golden Flyers (16-12 overall) host Rochester Wednesday

BROCKPORT, N.Y. -- Visiting Nazareth split a non-conference softball doubleheader Monday as the Golden Flyers defeated Brockport, 7-5, in the first game, before dropping the nightcap, 4-2.

Nazareth is 16-12 overall with three non-conference doubleheaders left in the regular season. Nazareth hosts Rochester Wednesday at 3 p.m.; Alfred State Saturday at 12 p.m. and visit RIT Sunday at 1 p.m.

Game 1 - Nazareth 7, Brockport 5
Nazareth banged out 16 hits, including three by Rachel Mertens, to take the first game. The score was tied 5-5 through the first three innings, but Nazareth plated single runs in the fourth and seventh innings to come out on top.

In the fourth singles by Marisa Tortora and Nicole White were sandwiched around a walk to Stephanie Mongelli to load the bases. One out later, Tortora came home with the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly by Mertens. The seventh inning started with singles by Mertens and Annika Guiliano, who moved up a base on a sacrifice bunt by Delaney St. George. Mertens scored on a single to centerfield by Kristen Simmons.

Nazareth trailed by scores of 2-0 and 3-2 before scoring three times in the third. The Golden Flyers had four singles, including one by Mertens that scored one run. Guiliano contributed a two-run double.

In addition to three hits for Mertens, Simmons, Tortora, White and Guiliano each had two hits. White gained her eighth pitching win by allowing just two earned runs and striking out three.

Game 2 - Brockport 4, Nazareth 2
The Golden Eagles inched back to the .500 mark at 16-16 by breaking a 2-2 tie with runs in the third and fourth innings.

Nazareth scored once in the top of the first inning on a solo home run by Sarah Papponetti. The Golden Flyers had three more hits in the third inning, including a run-scoring single by Meghan Barry for the team's second run.

Trailing 4-2 after the fourth inning, Nazareth left two runners on base without scoring in both the fifth and seventh innings. Simmons, Papponetti, Tortora and Barry each had two hits. Mertens pitched and took the loss despite allowing just one earned run over six innings.
