ROCHESTER, NY – Sophomore
Delaney St. George blasted a three-run walk-off home run to centerfield in Nazareth's 4-1 game two victory over the University of Rochester to help the Golden Flyers earn a split Tuesday night. It was her second walk-off home run of the season, as she also cracked a grand slam against Elmira on April 2.
Rachel Mertens finished the day 3-for-5 at the plate with two RBI and also earned the win on the mound in game two.
Nazareth returns to action on Saturday for its final home games of the season, hosting Alfred State College at 12 p.m. The Golden Flyers will honor their four seniors on Senior Day.
Game 1 – Rochester 5, Nazareth 3
Rochester jumped out with five runs in the first three innings and Nazareth was unable to dig out of the early hole.
The Yellowjackets delivered some clutch two-out hitting in the second to get on the scoreboard first. A two-RBI single by Harleigh Kaczegowicz just escaped the outstretched glove of
Sarah Papponetti. Anne Marie Cortes doubled later on to score two as the next batter and make it 4-0.
Rochester added one more run in the third inning.
Nicole White exited the game after going two innings, surrendering five runs on seven hits. White drops to 8-6 on the year with the loss.
Madison Zeis came in relief to get out of the inning shutting down all three batters she faced. She pitched a gem of a game, allowing just two hits to hold the visitors in check.
Nazareth got three runs back in the fourth to close in on Rochester.
Meghan Barry singled for an RBI and Mertens smashed a double to right center, scoring two more. Nazareth doomed itself with a base running error, eventually leading to a double play to end the inning with the score 5-3 in favor of the Yellowjackets.
Mertens was 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Barry was 2-for-3 with one RBI.
Game 2 –Nazareth 4, Rochester 1
St. George was responsible for all four RBI in the win. With the game tied 1-1 in the seventh, Zeis walked as the first batter and Mertens reached on an error to put runners on first and second. A batter later, St. George connected on her fourth home run of the season to end the contest.
Rochester's Courtney Semkewyc hit a solo home run to open the second for a 1-0 lead. Mertens was able to get out of a jam late, with help from St. George throwing out a runner at the plate.
St. George came up big with two outs in the fifth, delivering an RBI single to score Zeis from second to even the score at 1-1. She was 2-for-3 .
Mertens went seven innings, allowing six hits and striking out three to move her season record to 9-5.
