ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Host Hartwick outscored Nazareth 25-15 in the third quarter Friday to rally past Nazareth in an Empire 8 Conference women's basketball game, 72-70. The loss eliminates Nazareth from post-season contention in the E8 as the Golden Flyers fell to 11-13 overall and 7-8 in conference action. Hartwick improved to 16-8 overall and 12-3 in conference play.
Despite a 75-41 loss at Stevens, St. John Fisher clinched the fourth and final playoff spot in the Empire 8 Conference as the Cardinals stand at 9-6 in E8 action. Nazareth closes out its regular-season schedule Saturday at Stevens at 3 p.m.
In Friday's game, freshman
Rachel Benedict equaled a career high with 25 points to keep the Golden Flyers in the game. Senior
Sam Sorge added 15 points and junior
Samantha Peebles added 12.
Nazareth got off to a good start as a three-pointer by Benedict with 4:35 left in the first period resulted in a 16-4 lead. Hartwick scored the final eight points of the period to tie the score at 16.
In the second quarter, Benedict hit a three-pointer with 2:08 to go and Peebles followed with a basket to put Nazareth up 33-27. Hartwick's Anna Hickey hit a three-pointer to close the gap to 33-30 at the half.
In the third quarter, consecutive three-pointers by Emily Stone and Carly Johnson enabled Hartwico to go up 36-33 and the Hawks never trailed again. The lead grew to 55-42 after a pair of free throws by Sarah Shaw, but Nazareth's
Shelby Benjamin scored the last six points of the quarter to close the gap to 55-48.
Nazareth finally caught up with 3:29 left in the fourth quarter as
Erica Bradley hit a three-pointer to knot the score at 65-65. The Hawks scored on the next two possessions and led the rest of the way. Nazareth kept it close, but Hartwick hit three free throws in the closing seconds to hold on for its second win of the season over the Golden Flyers.
Nazareth made 24-of-46 shots from the field (52.2 percent), including 11-for-26 (42.3 percent) from three-point range. Stone led Hartwick with 20 points. Foreman had 18 points and eight rebounds.
