ROCHESTER, NY – Visiting Nazareth broke a tie at 49 in the third quarter and never looked back, downing East Avenue rival St. John Fisher 72-66 Saturday afternoon. Senior
Sam Sorge led Nazareth with 24 points on 7-for-16 from the floor, nailing four 3-pointers in the process. The Webster native is now the Nazareth all-time leader in 3-pointers, draining 185 in her career to surpass '01 graduate Sarah Curley (182).
The win marks Nazareth's first over Fisher in five meetings. Nazareth is now 11-12 overall and 7-7 in conference play, while Fisher drops to 11-11 and 8-5, respectively.
Nazareth scored the final five points of the third to open up a 54-49 lead.
Shelby Benjamin converted a layup with 1:03 to play, a lead the Golden Flyers would not surrender the rest of the game. Sorge drained another 3-pointer for the 54-49 margin.
Rachel Benedict provided a huge lift in the fourth, scoring the first eight points for Nazareth to help extend the lead. Her third 3-pointer of the game pushed the lead to 62-51 with 6:42 to play. She was 7-for-11 in the game to go along with seven rebounds.
Fisher closed to within four points twice with under a minute to play, but Nazareth had an answer each time.
The Golden Flyers crashed the boards hard in the first half, holding a 19-7 advantage. Hot shooting from the Cardinals, however, kept them in the contest.
Samantha Peebles hit a 3-pointer later in the second quarter to give Nazareth its largest lead at 32-25.
Shortly after, Sorge connected on her second 3-pointer of the day to give the visitors a 35-29 advantage – that 3-pointer gave Sorge the 3-point record.
The Golden Flyers were an efficient 6-for-13 from 3-point range to take a 37-35 halftime lead.
Peebles was 5-for-12 with five rebounds and five assists.
Nazareth will hit the road for its final two conference games, beginning on Friday at Hartwick with a 6 p.m. contest.
