Samantha Peebles scored a career-high 28 points (9-for-19), including going 7-for-12 from 3-point range, to help Nazareth cruise past visiting Oswego 66-37 on Tuesday night at Kidera Gymnasium. Peebles was just one 3-pointer shy of tying the Nazareth single game record of eight set in 2015-16 by Julia Brew, which she set against the Lakers. She also grabbed 10 rebounds to record her second-straight double-double.
Nazareth moves to 2-1 on the season with the win, while Oswego drops to 1-2.
The Golden Flyers came out in full court pressure, causing nine turnovers which led to 17 points in the opening quarter. Nazareth started strong from 3-point land, hitting seven of its first nine from distance, including four (4-for-5) from Peebles and two from
Rachel Benedict (2-for-2). The duo combined for 24 points in the first quarter and 49 in the game.
Trailing 13-11 four minutes in, Nazareth used a 20-2 run to close out the quarter to open up a 31-15 advantage.
After shooting 66.7 percent in the first (12-for-18), Nazareth cooled off to shoot 4-for-22 (18.2 percent) in the second quarter. On the other hand, Oswego shot just 2-for-13 (15.4 percent), allowing the Golden Flyers to mount a 40-20 margin at the half.
Following three quarters, Nazareth's lead increased to 25 at 54-29.
Oswego never came within 20 points of the Golden Flyers following the 8:32 mark of the third quarter.
Benedict ended with 21 points on 8-for-16 form the floor and grabbed nine rebounds.
Rose Pedretti and
Isabella Gjonaj each chipped in four points. Gjonaj also had a game-high four steals.
Nazareth returns to action on Sunday, traveling to John Carroll for 2 p.m. matchup.
