University Heights, OH – Visiting Nazareth scored just 11 points in the second half after shooting 4-for-19 (21.1 percent) as John Carroll erased a six point halftime deficit to defeat the Golden Flyers, 70-48 Sunday afternoon.
Both squads move to 2-2 on the season with the result.
Despite John Carroll shooting nearly 60 percent in the first half (14-of-24), Nazareth led 37-31 going into the break with a balanced attack. Nazareth shot 40.7 percent (11-of-27) to open the game.
After trailing to begin the contest,
Samantha Peebles hit a pair of free throws with 3:55 remaining in the first quarter to give Nazareth a 13-11 lead.
Rachel Benedict gave Nazareth its largest lead of the half, 25-15, following a 3-pointer early in the second quarter.
The Blue Streaks clawed their way back to come within one point on two occasions.
Lizzie Straub, who had nine first half points, drilled a timely 3-pointer to make it 33-29. She finished with 11 points.
Nazareth had a third quarter to forget Sunday, shooting 1-for-11, allowing the Blue Streaks to take a 46-39 lead into the fourth. Peebles had the lone points in the third on a layup 5:28 in. She was the leading scorer for the Golden Flyers with 15 points (4-for-10).
In the fourth, John Carroll put up 24 points to Nazareth's nine.
Benedict had eight points while
Haley Schoelerman notched six points in the losing effort.
Nazareth returns to action on Thursday at 6 p.m. when it takes on RIT at the University of Rochester for the Mark's Pizzeria Crosstown Shootout.
