Nazareth splits with Rowan, Fredonia at NY Challenge

ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Nazareth split its final two matches Saturday as the Golden Flyers completed day two of the New York Regional Challenge hosted by the University of Rochester. Nazareth defeated Rowan in four sets by scores of 25-14, 23-25, 25-21, 25-23, then lost to Fredonia in four by scores of 25-23, 27-29, 25-12, 25-18.

Nazareth completed the weekend with a 20-12 overall record and will be the second seed for next weekend's Empire 8 Conference Tournament at Stevens. Nazareth is schedule to play third-seeded St. John Fisher Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Stevens' Canavan Arena. The Ducks will host Alfred in the other semifinal. The championship match, which carries with it an automatic berth ot the NCAA Tournament, is Sunday at 12 p.m.

In Saturday morning's match against Rowan, Nazareth got 16 kills from sophomore Delaney Martin and 11 apiece from juniors Kelsey Milligan and Carmen Sapp. Freshman Jessica Barry amassed 49 assists and freshman libero Savannah Bothner had 18 digs. The Golden Flyers posted a tidy .248 hitting percentage (59-22-149).

In the second match, Nazareth hung tough with Fredonia by splitting the first two sets. Fredonia held on to take the first set 25-23, before Nazareth rallied to take set two 29-27. Fredonia took Nazareth down in the next two sets to take the match.

Sapp had 12 kills and sophomore Melissa Newcomb totaled 11. Barry had 36 assists, while Bothner added 15 digs and three aces.
