ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Visiting Rochester outlasted Nazareth Tuesday in a four-set non-conference women's volleyball match at the Kidera Gymnasium. Nazareth won a close first set 25-23, but the Yellowjackets rallied to win the next three sets by scores of 25-19, 25-20, 26-24.
Nazareth had a five-match winning streak snapped in dropping to 19-10 overall. Rochester improved to 16-10 overall.
Junior
Kelsey Milligan led Nazareth with 12 kills, while freshman setter
Jessica Barry totaled 32 assists. Freshman
Savannah Bothner amassed 17 digs.
Nazareth trailed 23-20 late in the first set, but scored the last five points to win it. Kills by
Madison Joseph and
Delaney Martin fueled the rally as did a service ace by sophomore
Donovan Enriquez.
The second set was tied at 17-17 when the Yellowjackets went on a seven-point scoring binge to take control. UR's Clara Martinez had a pair of kills and a block during the scoring run and Beth Ghyzel had the set clinching kill.
The third set saw Nazareth jump to a 4-0 lead, only to have UR answer with seven straight points to secure the lead for good. The lead swelled to 18-8, before Nazareth staged its own rally and closed to within 19-16 with the help of two kills by Martin and a pair of service aces by Bothner. UR, however, regrouped to take the set as Alara Kocak finished with four kills in the set.
Nazareth battled in the fourth set and led 20-18 before UR came back again. The set was tied at 21-21, 23-23 and 24-24 before the Yellowjackets finished off the Golden Flyers with kills by Ghyzel and Martinez. Milligan had four of her kills in the set and Bothner delivered eight of her digs.
Joseph finished with nine kills for Nazareth and
Celia Cordero had five service aces. Ghyzel had a match-high 13 kills for the Yellowjacket and Kocak had 11.
Nazareth travels to UR this weekend to take part in the New York Regional Challenge. Nazareth plays NYU Friday at 4, then Rowan Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and Fredonia at 2:30 p.m.
