ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Host Nazareth overcame a slow start to overtake Alfred in an Empire 8 Conference women's basketball game Saturday, 74-39, at the Kidera Gymnasium.

It marked Nazareth second win of the season over the Saxons, who lost for the 14th straight time to fall to 2-16 overall and 0-9 in the E8. Nazareth improved to 8-10 and 4-5. Nazareth also defeated Alfred, 88-64, on Jan. 6. The Golden Flyers are home again Tuesday for an Empire 8 Conference game against Ithaca at 6 p.m.

Senior Sam Sorge led the Golden Flyers with 20 points. Junior Samantha Peebles added 18 points with eight rebounds and five assists and freshman Rachel Benedict had 10 points, a career-high 15 rebounds and six assists.

Nazareth made just 4 of 19 first-quarter field goals to take a tenuous 12-9 lead. The Golden Flyers' shooting improved in the second quarter as they made 7 of 14 shots, including one three-pointer to go up 29-20 at halftime. Peebles scored 11 points in the first half and Sorge had eight.

Nazareth continued its hot shooting in the third quarter by making 10 of 20 shots from the field, including three-point baskets by Peebles, Lizzie Straub and Lucille Dellos. The Golden Flyers outscored Alfred 25-8 during that 10-minute stretch to take a commanding 54-28 lead into the fourth quarter.

Nazareth continued to pour it on in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Saxons 20-11 with Sorge connecting twice from three-point range.

Overall, Nazareth made 29 of 70 shots (41.4 percent), including 7 of 27 three-pointers. Alfred shot just 25 percent for the game (16-for-64) with just two three-pointers.
