ROCHESTER, NY – Senior
Sam Sorge scored 33 points, her second time in a week going over the 30-point plateau, however, visiting Ithaca was able to squeak out a 60-58 victory Tuesday night at Kidera Gymnasium.
Nazareth drops to 8-11 overall and 4-6 in the Empire 8, while Ithaca improves to 16-3 and 8-2, respectively.
Following two missed free throws by the Bombers Erin Woop, Nazareth had a chance tie the game on the final possession, trailing 60-57.
Samantha Peebles was fouled on a 3-point attempt with .3 seconds remaining. The junior hit the first free throw attempt, but came up short on the second attempt as the Bombers narrowly escaped the Golden Flyers.
Ithaca scored the final seven points of the first quarter, including a 3-pointer as time expired to open up a 17-9 lead.
Sorge scored eight of her 11 first half points in the second quarter to help Nazareth trim the Bombers lead to 31-26 at the half. Ithaca's Jordan Beers scored at the end of the quarter to take the five point advantage into the break.
Each team struggled to take care of the ball in the opening half, induced by full-court pressure. Nazareth had 10 turnovers to Ithaca's 13.
The Golden Flyers came out flying to start the third, with Sorge scoring the first eight points over two minutes to give the hosts a 34-31 advantage. She finished the quarter 6-for-8 for 15 points.
Nazareth built its largest led of the game, 45-39, following deep jumper from
Lizzie Straub. The Bombers worked back to even the score at 48-48 heading into the fourth.
Ithaca took the lead early, but Sorge helped keep Nazareth close. A layup at the midway point made it 56-55 in favor of the Bombers.
Sorge went 12-for-22, including 5-for-10 from 3-point range, with eight rebounds.
Peebles contributed 10 points (2-for-9) and 11 boards for the double-double.
Straub notched six points (3-for-7).
Nazareth will hit the road on Thursday, taking on Utica College for a 6 p.m. contest.
