ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Stevens defeated host Nazareth 75-66 in a women's Empire 8 basketball game Friday evening. Senior
Sam Sorge connected on six three-point attempts on her way to scoring a game-high 26 points. Sorge surpassed 1,000 career points midway through the game.
Following the loss, the Golden Flyers slip to 6-8 overall and 2-3 in conference games. With the victory, the Ducks improve to 7-7 overall and 6-1 in Empire 8 games.
Nazareth used a 6-0 run midway through the fourth quarter to trim the Ducks' advantage to four points with 3:35 to play in regulation, however, Stevens connected on free throw attempts in the closing minutes to pull away for the nine-point victory. Sorge had the first five points of the Golden Flyers' scoring run with a jumper and three-pointer, then freshman
Rachel Benedict added a free throw.
The Golden Flyers opened the game with a 7-0 scoring run on baskets by Sorge, freshman Shelby Robinson, and junior
Samantha Peebles. Stevens answered with a 23-8 scoring run spanning midway through the first period and into the second to take a 23-21 lead.
After settling for a 35-33 deficit at the half, Nazareth opened the third quarter with a 6-0 scoring run behind a layup by Sorge and a pair of baskets by Peebles to claim a 39-35 lead. The Ducks answered with a 15-6 scoring run to take a 50-45 lead with 3:27 to play in the third quarter to take the lead for good. Sorge brought the Golden Flyers to within two points, 54-52, with 1:29 to play in the period after a shot from outside the arc, but Stevens stymied Nazareth's attempt to reclaim the lead in the final period.
Stevens shot over 47 percent (26-55) from the field compared to Nazareth's 42 percent (23-55), and the Ducks took advantage of 24 turnovers by the Golden Flyers.
In addition to the points from Sorge, Peebles and Benedict finished with 18 points and nine points, respectively.
Stevens had four players score in double-digits led by Anna Toke with 15 points. Kaitlyn Astel added 13 points while Megan Brown and Alison Criswell each had 12 points.
Nazareth is in action again on Saturday when the Golden Flyers host Hartwick at 2 p.m.
