OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Visiting Oswego outscored Nazareth 12-6 in the five-minute overtime period Monday to gain a 64-58 non-conference victory in women's basketball action at the Max Ziel Gymnasium.
The game was the first for Nazareth in 25 days following the holiday break and dropped the Golden Flyers' overall record to 4-4. Oswego improved to 3-7. The Golden Flyers have one final non-conference test at home Wednesday vs. Hilbert at 6 p.m. before embarking on Empire 8 Conference play. Nazareth visits Alfred and Houghton this weekend.
Monday's game was close throughout, but the Golden Flyers' normally reliable outside shooting was missing in action as the Lakers took advantage. Senior
Sam Sorge scored 19 points, but went 1-for-7 from three-point range and 0-for-6 from the foul line. Nazareth went just 2-for-16 from three-point range (.125) and 8-for-17 from the free throw line (.471), both season lows.
Nazareth still was in good position to win after a basket by
Samantha Peebles (12 points) with 2.3 seconds left in regulation put the Golden Flyers up 52-50. After a Laker timeout advanced the ball to mid-court, Oswego's Alison Nunziato inbounded the ball in front of Oswego's bench and found Rachael Windhausen streaking to the hoop behind her defender. Windhausen came up short on her first layup attempt but had the wherewithal to collect the offensive board and sink the second chance as the buzzer sounded to tie the score at 52-52 and force overtime.
The Lakers then dominated the overtime period by scoring the first six points to gain a commanding advantage they didn't relinquish. Courtney Amelee made two baskets and Windhausen sank a pair of free throws to stake the Lakers to a 58-52 lead. Amelee added another basket later in the period, giving her six of her 17 points in the extra period. Nazareth, meanwhile, was just 3-for-9 from the field in overtime.
The Golden Flyers showed some rust in the early going as they were playing for the first time since Dec. 8. They missed their first six shots and fell behind in the first quarter by scores of 9-0 and 18-5 before rallying. Nazareth scored the last seven points of the quarter -- five by Sorge and two by
Rachel Benedict -- to close within 18-12.
Nazareth kept chipping away and finally took its first lead at 21-20 on a basket by
Rose Pedretti with 7:18 left in the second quarter. Oswego regained the lead and was ahead 27-25 at halftime. The lead seesawed back and forth in the third quarter with Nazareth gaining a 38-37 lead after a jumper by Sorge in the closing seconds of the period.
Nazareth opened the fourth quarter with an 8-4 scoring run to go up 46-41. Oswego's Mary Mazzella hit a three-pointer and Heather Hebert added a basket to tie the score again at 46-46. Another basket by Mazzella with 2:06 left lifted the Lakers to a 50-48 lead, but Sorge scored with :52 seconds left and Peebles added her late basket to set the stage for the final 2.3 seconds.
Sorge finished with eight rebounds in addition to her team-high 19 points and freshman
Shelby Benjamin contributed nine points. Hebert had a game-high 24 points with 10 rebounds to pace the Lakers.
