Golden Flyers improve to 9-5 overall

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Sophomore Haley DeVona scored a career-high seven goals and her sister Nicole, a junior, added three goals and one assist Friday as Nazareth defeated host Elmira in an Empire 8 Conference women's lacrosse match, 20-9.

Nazareth won for the second straight time in conference play and improved to 9-5 overall and 4-2 in Empire 8 games. Elmira dropped to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the E8.

Haley DeVona scored three times in the first half and four more times in the second and now has a team-high 36 goals on the season with nine assists for 45 points. Nicole DeVona scored twice in the first half and once in the second and now has 19 goals for the season. Junior Kate Rothrock contributed two goals and four assists and junior Jamie Martin had two goals and three assists. Senior Carly Gates and freshman Kellie Byrne also scored twice each. Junior Gabbie Charles and sophomore Morgan Johnson also scored.'

Nazareth went up 3-0 in the first half and never trailed, but Elmira stayed within striking distance in the first half as as the Soaring Eagles' goalie, Lindsay Wargo, made 12 of her 17 saves in the first half.

Haley DeVona's third goal of the first half, with 2:42 left, put the Golden Flyers up 8-4, but Elmira's Kyra McDonald scored on a free-position shot with just :01 left in the half to bring the Soaring Eagles to within 8-5 at the break.

Nazareth created more separation in the first four minutes of the second half by scoring three more times. Martin scored off a free-position attempt, then Charles and Rothrock added unassisted scores to push the lead to 11-5. A goal by Elmira's Moorea Spoljaric interrupted the string, but Nazareth pulled away again by scoring four of the next five goals to go up 15-7.

Spoljaric then added two more goals for Elmira -- her fourth and fifth of the game and 47th and 48th of the season -- before Nazareth closed out the scoring by delivering the last five goals -- three by Haley DeVona and one by Nicole DeVona.

Nazareth finished with a 57-22 edge in shots and won 22 of 30 draw controls. Gates had four ground balls and won six draws. Nicole DeVona won five draws and senior Kayla McKay had five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Freshman Brianna Rizzari played the first 30 minutes in goal and made two saves. Sophomore Mackenzie Corbett had four saves over the final 30 minutes.

Nazareth closes out its regular-season schedule with a pair of Empire 8 Conference games next week. The Golden Flyers visit Houghton Wednesday for a 5 p.m. start and are home Saturday to play Utica at 1 p.m.
