Updated statsPINE VALLEY, N.Y. -- Host Elmira used a late third-period goal to tie the score and then got the game-winner in the opening minute of overtime Saturday to rally past Nazareth, 4-3, in an ECAC West Conference game played at the MAC Ice Arena.
The Elmira win enabled the Soaring Eagles to gain a split of a pair of conference games over the weekend. Nazareth won 4-2 on Friday and now stands at 7-11-4 overall and 3-6-1 in conference games. Elmira improved to 10-9-2 and 3-7-1.
Elmira's Jeremy Marginsky scored the game-winning goal on the first shot on goal of the overtime period -- just 48 seconds in -- to break the 3-3 deadlock. A goal by Michael Collins with just 3:05 left in regulation tied the score and forced the extra period.
Nazareth was clinging to a one-goal lead at the time on the strength of power-play goals by
Matt Manzella,
C.J. Murray and
Oliver Janzen.
The Golden Flyers dominated the first period with a 19-6 advantage in shots on goal, but neither team could find the back of the net. Each team then capitalized in the second period. After Elmira scored on the power play early in the second period, Nazarth answered less than two minutes later as Manzella scored on a shot from the point off assists from Janzen and
Scott Andler.
The next two goals also came less than a minute apart as Elmira's goal at 7:45 was countered by a Murray goal at 8:44 off an assist by
John Power. Janzen then added his team-leading seventh goal of the season off power-play assists from Andler and J.R Wojciechowski to give Nazareth a 3-2 advantage heading into the third period.
That set the stage for the third period in which Elmira had a 10-8 advantage in shots. The Golden Flyers had a 38-30 advantage overall. Senior
Ed Zdolshek made the second start of the weekend in goal and made 26 saves. His Elmira counterpart, Sandro Aeschliman had 35 saves, including 19 in the first period.
Nazareth returns to action Friday and Saturday to host Neumann in the team's final home games. Game time is 7 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Saturday.
