Updated StatsROCHESTER, NY – Neumann College scored two goals in a :14 second span of the second period to take a 3-1 lead, and the visitors were able to hold on in the final period to secure the two goal victory.
With the loss, Nazareth falls to 7-12-4 overall and 4-8-1 in conference play, while Neumann improves to 13-7-3 and 5-6-2, respectively.
Each squad generated some solid scoring chances in the opening period, with the Knights holding a 21-14 shot advantage.
It was the visitors who would find the net first late in the period. Anthony Pino jammed a shot near the net that was saved by
Ed Zdolshek, before Mike Davis capitalized on the rebound.
Trailing 1-0 early in the second period,
Scott Andler found the net to even the score at 1-1.
Rocky Gruttadauria slotted a pass to Andler in front of the net for the one-time tally.
Midway through the period Neumann found the back of the net on the power play off a goal from Brandon Gagne.
Just :14 seconds later, Nazareth had a defensive letdown and the Knights capitalized to push ahead 3-1. The score would remain that way heading into the third period.
The final frame belonged to the Golden Flyers as they went on three power plays and outshot the opposition 20-5, however they were unable to find the back of the net.
"I really liked how we responded and competed during the third period," said head coach
George Roll. "We need to bring that intensity from the start of the game. I credit Neumann for coming out and playing hard from the start."
Zdolshek made 39 saves in net for Nazareth.
Nazareth returns to the ice for Senior Night on Saturday, hosting Neumann at 4 p.m. The Golden Flyers will honor their 14 seniors, the first-ever graduating class of the program.
