Samantha Peebles posted a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds and senior
Lindsey Kelly scored a game-high 25 points as visiting Nazareth dominated Alfred from start to finish in a 87-64 women's basketball victory in Empire 8 Conference action Friday.
Nazareth improved to 8-3 overall and 1-1 in Empire 8 Conference games. Alfred is 0-1 in conference play and 1-9 overall. Nazareth is on the road again Saturday against Elmira at 7 p.m.
Nazareth's
Kelly Broderick nailed a three-pointer on the Golden Flyers' opening possession and Nazareth never trailed thereafter. The score was tied at 13-13 after Alfred's McKaylee Croll sank two free throws with 3:47 left in the first quarter, but Kelly scored on Nazareth's next possession and Broderick hit another three-pointer as Nazareth settled for a 22-19 lead after 10 minutes.
In the second quarter, Nazareth's lead continued to grow. Senior
Sam Sorge hit a three-pointer and Kelly converted a conventional three-point play to push the lead to double digits for the first time at 32-21 with 6:37 left in the half. Peebles got involved offensively later in the second quarter by sinking two free throws and then scoring off an offensive rebound as Nazareth's lead ballooned to 45-26 with 1:52 to go in the half. Nazareth eventually settled for a 47-33 lead at the half.
In the second half, Sorge scored 13 of her 16 points as the Golden Flyers maintained their double digit advantage.
Kelly went 11 for 14 from the field to raise her field goal percentage to .636 (89-for-140) for the season. She also grabbed nine rebounds. Peebles added four assists and Broderick contributed seven assisted in addition to her nine points. Senior
Julia Brew also reached double figures with 10 points.
Veronica Peck had nine points and four assists.
