Updated statsROCHESTER, NY – Host Nazareth used some record-breaking long-range shooting to pull away from Hartwick in the fourth quarter
Tuesday as the Golden Flyers secured a key 87-74 Empire 8 Conference victory in women's basketball at the Kidera Gymnasium.
For the second time this season, the Golden Flyers broke the school record for three-pointers in a game with 17 long-range shots to sink the Hawks, who dropped to 6-8 overall and 4-2 in conference play. Nazareth improved to 11-4 overall and 4-2 in the E8. Nazareth set the previous record with 15 three-point shots in a win earlier this season against Oswego. Overall, Nazareth shot 17-for-35 (48.6 percent) from three-point range.
Senior
Sam Sorge went 7-for-10 from three-point range and finished with a game- and career-high 27 points. Senior
Lindsey Kelly didn't make any three-pointers, but posted a double-double with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Senior
Veronica Peck added three three-pointers and had 15 points and five assists and senior
Kelly Broderick added four three-pointers for a season-high 12 points.
The Hawks, meanwhile, made 11 three-pointers of their own, including nine in the first half. Taylor Vonasek had three and finished with a team-high 21 points. Emily Stone had 12 points, Jacqui Foreman 11 and Alicia Razanousky 10.
The fourth quarter proved decisive for Nazareth as the Golden Flyers erupted for 32 points in the final 10 minutes to break away from a tenuous 55-52 lead. The Golden Flyers hit three-pointers on their first three possessions of the quarter -- two by Sorge and one by Peck -- to take a seemingly safe 64-52 lead. The Hawks, however, stormed back behind a 14-2 scoring run to take a 68-66 lead on Caitlin Corbett's three-pointer with 3:26 left.
Kelly answered for Nazareth by converting back to back three-point plays and then adding an extra free throw off a technical foul shot to give Nazareth the lead for good at 73-70. The Golden Flyers preserved the lead by canning free throws in the closing minutes. Peck went 6-for-6 from the line in the final 1:03 and Sorge added two more free throws.
Nazareth trailed 21-17 after one quarter, then rallied to go up 40-39 after a first half that saw the two teams combine for 19 three-point baskets. Nazareth went 10-for-22 from long distance with Sorge accounting for four and Peck,
Julia Brew and Broderick hitting two each. Hartwick, meanwhile, went 9-for-14 from beyond the arc with Vonasek going 3-for-3 and Stone, Johnson and Razanousky each making two.
Nazareth shot 26-for-56 (46.4 percent) overall and went 18-for-22 (81.8 percent) from the foul line. The Golden Flyers are on the road this weekend for conference games at Stevens Friday at 8 p.m. and Utica Saturday at 4.
